Former Senior Rwandan Official Joseph Nzirorera Dies in ICTR Custody
The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) said Friday that a former senior Rwandan official, Joseph Nzirorera, 59, had died in custody during his trial on a host of charges, including genocide and crimes against humanity of rape and extermination.
Nzirorera died on Thursday “following sudden complications of a long illness,” it said.
Nzirorera was a former minister and secretary-general of the ruling party MRNDD under president Juvenal Habyarimana, whose assassination sparked off the genocide.
Arrested in Benin in June 1998, he had been on trial since September 2005 along with two other former senior party officials, Mathieu Ngirumpatse and Edouard Karemera.
