The “trained and ready” to give false testimony in Rwandan Genocide trial witnesses

According to a former witness in a case of the Rwandan genocide treated in Belgium, the witnesses from Rwanda are “trained” and “prepared” by the current Rwandan regime and the association of Tutsi victimsIbukato give false testimony about the events that took place in 1994.

The witness, whose identity was hidden for security reasons, said his experience in an episode of the television show FlemishTerzakewhich was broadcast on the television channelCanvaslast Friday, April 5.He reported the “preparation” of the Rwandan witnesses to testify at hearings before the Belgian courts and claims to have been commissioned by the Rwandan authorities to lie in his accusations against the defendant.

“The Rwandan authorities are involved [in the preparation of witnesses].The Prosecutor has led me himself at the airport [Kigali] to fly to Belgium (…) The Rwandan authorities do not want to lose genocide trials abroad (…) If all indicators were prepared in the same way as I was, then maybe all those who were convicted were actually innocent”, he said, adding that he did not want the Rwandan government know who he is, because he knew“they could nuir to his still in Rwanda”.

In the same issue, Filip Reyntjes, a professor at the University of Antwerp, says witness preparation by Rwanda and confirms the existence of a close cooperation betweenIbukaand local prosecutors that aims to “prepare witnesses and provide scenarios and scripts to memorize before sending in court proceedings”.He also added that the witnesses who refuse to tell the story as they received instruction in the plan may “sanctions and vengeance,” not only for themselves but also for their families.

For its part, the Cameroonian journalist Charles Ako, is quoted as saying that the instigation of witnesses is a “well-organized system”that uses the real victims of genocide to testify against the accused innocent is as though the defendant was the actual perpetrator of the crimes committed against them.He concluded by noting that the system “will continue to exist as the RPF remains in power”and said he was”absolutely sure that the witnesses will give false testimony in the upcoming trial of Rwanda in Belgium”.

Belgium has about 30,000 Rwandans on its soil and, like many other European countries, found several Rwandans for their role in the Rwandan genocide. So far twelve cases were treated by the Belgian courts, most of them led to a conviction of the accused.Witness statements have played a key role in all cases.
