Rwanda: Two Generals of the Rwanda Defence Force arrested

Gen Karake and Lt-Gen Muhire, arrestedGen Maj Karenzi Karake and Lt-Gen Charles Muhire arrested

Kigali – The Defence and Military Leadership, yesterday, suspended from duty and arrested Lieutenant General Charles Muhire and Major General Emmanuel Karenzi Karake.

This was revealed by the Defence and military spokesman, Major Jill Rutaremara, who said that the two senior army officers committed serious offences.

Lt. Gen. Muhire was suspended due to serious charges of corruption and misuse of office while Maj. Gen. Karenzi was suspended on serious charges of immoral conduct that contravenes and undermines the values and ethos of the Rwanda Defence Force, Maj. Rutaremara said in a statement released yesterday.

This action was taken in order to enforce discipline, moral conduct and accountability in the Rwanda Defence Force.
Rutaremara added that investigations continue.

It is only ten days ago that President Paul Kagame had appointed Lt. Gen. Charles Muhire as the Reserve Force Commander a new arm of the army. Until then, Lt. Gen Muhire had been heading the Rwanda Airforce where he has worked for several years.

Major General Karenzi Karake led the UN Peacekeeping Forces in Darfur, Sudan before being recalled over accusations of war crimes and genocide committed between 1994 and 1998 against Rwandan Hutu refugees and Congolese and the killing of Spanish catholic missionaries. Upon his return from Darfour, General Paul Kagame assigned him to a position of the director of a military training school for army officers.

People have heard the official reasons given by the defence and army spokesman, but are still waiting to know the real reasons behind the arrestation of those high ranking officers of the Rwanda Defence Force.

Another human waste??? so fast? Only two days after being declared to be healthy organic food ( the two generals were praised for hard work during the swearing in ceremony).

Would it be a sign that the body is having a serious digestive system problem? Let us pray so that it does not develop into a cholera epidemic. The signs are not very assuring though , there is a serious likelihood. As you know it can be fatal and unfortunately it is also very contagious. It could cost so many lives and we may need international relief aid in terms of medecine. It is a good opportunity for General Marcel Gatsinzi to shine on this occasion as Minister for Refugee ( human waste) and Disaster Management. Ech one of us can contribute by using their network in the international community. We have to appreciate that Gatsinzi is new and his work could be jeopardised if the Gacaca courts decided to call him again.
Dont agonise organise.

There is a wise saying in Africa that when elephants fight the grass suffers. Whether the fighting is inter tutsi, inter hutu,or hutu against tutsi the grass ( common) suffers.
This is what has happened when elites have been fighting for the control of power.
Outside can supplement internal efforts to avoid contamination that may lead unnecessary loss of lives. The outside will not come in to do it for you. Dont sit on the fence and wait.
I hope you are with us inside the country not out there with the luxury of saying: let us give time to time for things to undo themselves.

Rwandans need a strong support from the International Community. Chaos is looming, and no one ignores what Gen. Kagame once promised : to leave Rwanda in the same state he found it in 1994. The International Community should strongly condemn Kagame’s dictatorial attitudes and support opposition leaders who are in jail or morally tortured at home. The silence of US, UK, Canada, France and Belgium is an obvious backing of Gen. Kagame and his RPF as they kill, send to jail or exile opposition leaders and shut down independent newspapers. All the peaceful opportunities Kagame had to open up the Rwandan political space were misused, which means the man has only been waiting for some order from Obama, Gordon or Sarkozy. The ball is in these powerful men’s camp!
