Nearly 30,000 Rwandan refugees still live in North-Kivu, DR Congo

Kinshasa, DR Congo – Nearly 30,000 Rwandan refugees still live in the North-Kivu province in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the head of the provincial unit of the National Refugee Committee (NRC), Laingulia Njewa, said on Monday.
He was speaking to the press at a workshop which was held from 12 to 15/03/2011 in Goma on identification and sensitization mechanisms with a view to repatriating Rwandan refugees in DRC.
The meeting brought together the administrators of territories, the heads of chieftaincies and sectors, and the delegates of the Congolese specialised services. It was facilitated by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

Agents appointed to take a census of the refugees at the level of groupings, localities and villages are to put across messages, at places of worship so as to locate the volunteers who are in safe and accessible places.

Since the beginning of the Rwandan refugee repatriation from the North-Kivu province to their native country, 98,919 people have opted for voluntary repatriation to Rwanda.

For last year, 7,670 of them returned to Rwanda from North-Kivu while 1,176 have been repatriated since the beginning of the year.
